A species thought lost was discovered surviving in an unlikely place — a tiny alley in Bermuda. The greater Bermuda land snail once thrived across the islands before habitat loss and invasive species devastated its population. By the 1990s, scientists feared it had disappeared. Then, in 2014, living snails were discovered surviving in roughly 200 square feet of urban habitat. What followed became an extraordinary wildlife conservation and species recovery effort. Through conservation breeding, habitat restoration, invasive predator control and wildlife reintroduction, scientists eventually released 105,970 snails across Bermuda. Some releases failed. But on protected offshore islands, new populations survived, reproduced and became self-sustaining. This conservation documentary reveals how scientists brought a tiny Critically Endangered species back from the brink—and why saving overlooked species matters for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and nature recovery.
