Whole exome sequencing (WES) is a genetic test that analyzes all of the protein-coding regions of a person's genes. These regions, called exons, make up about 2% of the genome, but they contain most of the known disease-causing mutations. By sequencing the exome, doctors can identify genetic variations that may be causing a person's health problems. WES is a powerful tool for diagnosing genetic disorders, especially those that are difficult to diagnose using other methods. It can also be used to identify individuals who are at risk of developing a genetic disorder in the future. How WES works WES begins with a blood or saliva sample from the patient. The DNA from the sample is extracted and then fragmented into smaller pieces. These pieces are then enriched for exons, which are the regions of DNA that code for proteins.
