Thank you for being here.
I made this to stay in the background — one unbroken hour to leave running while you work, study, or sit still.
What is in it: eight instrumental pieces, joined so the changes pass without a break. A Japanese bamboo flute (shakuhachi) leads all the way through and stays in front, with a low tenor saxophone answering from further back, a handpan resting far behind it, a bowed cello holding long notes underneath and bright pads high above. There are no drums, no beat, and nothing builds to a climax. There is no birdsong and no sound of water in this one — only the instruments. The place it was made for is an avenue of enormous old cedars leading up to a small shrine, on an early autumn morning: two long rows of trunks, gravel underfoot, moss on the stone lanterns, bands of low sunlight coming between the trees through the last of the mist, and a single deer standing still in one of them.
SUGI — 杉, the Japanese cedar, planted along the approach to a shrine and left to grow for a very long time. The hour just after sunrise, when the light comes in low between the trunks.
If it helps you work, study, or just sit quietly for a while, I'm glad.
