Check out our most recent Language Matters: Class 7 Zoom session with featured speaker Lavonna Little Owl Real Bird (Apsáalooke)!
Lavonna is Apsáalooke from the Crow Reservation and teaches at Crow Agency Elementary School. Crow is her first language, which feeds her passion for ensuring the next generation of Apsáalooke people carry the language forward.
During this hour-long Zoom session, Lavonna talks about the lack of Crow-centered children’s books and how she began taking children’s books written in English and reading them in the Crow language to her students. For teaching numbers and animals her methods include flashcards as well as translated books. She demonstrates an exercise with large dice that she rolls to her students and has them speak aloud the face-up number in Crow.
Each Language Matters session is intended to bring together Indigenous language teachers, share resources and inspire new ideas and methods for the preservation of Indigenous languages.
All our Language Matters sessions are hosted by Whitney TopSky.
