Infertility Facts and Social Pressure Infertility is not just a medical condition; it is also an emotional, psychological, and social journey. Globally, around 15–18% of couples experience infertility, while in Pakistan approximately 2 out of every 10 couples face this challenge. Many people assume that infertility is always caused by women, but medical evidence shows otherwise. About 40% of infertility cases are related to female factors, 40% to male factors, and 20% involve both partners. Common causes of female infertility include thyroid disorders, ovulation problems, hormonal imbalances, and blocked fallopian tubes. Male infertility may result from low sperm count, poor sperm motility, reduced number of healthy sperm, and other medical conditions. Social pressure often makes infertility even more difficult. Couples living in joint family systems may struggle with privacy, family interference, and constant questions about having children. Infertility can affect marital relationships, self-esteem, mental health, and social wellbeing. Stress, anxiety, depression, blame, and family pressure are common challenges faced by many couples. Women under 35 years of age should seek medical advice if pregnancy does not occur after one year of regular unprotected intercourse. Women aged 35 and older should consult a doctor after six months of trying. Many couples waste valuable time relying on unqualified healers, home remedies, internet myths, and advice from relatives. In some cases, these approaches may even delay proper treatment. It is important to remember that IVF is not the only treatment option. Many infertility conditions can be successfully treated with proper diagnosis, medical care, lifestyle changes, and family support.
