How Did Ancient Egyptians Use the Toilet? | Ancient Egyptian Toilets & Sanitation What did people in Ancient Egypt do when they needed to use the toilet? Around 3,000 years ago, there were no modern bathrooms, flushing toilets, underground sewer systems, or running water. Yet ancient Egyptians still had to solve the same basic human problem we deal with every day. In this video, we explore how Ancient Egyptians used toilets, where waste went, how toilet seats and containers worked, and how ordinary households dealt with sanitation without modern plumbing. You'll discover archaeological evidence of ancient Egyptian toilets and latrine arrangements, including an example from Amarna where a toilet seat was positioned over an opening with a pottery container underneath to collect waste. We'll also explore Deir el-Medina, the famous workers' village, and why archaeologists have not found clear fixed toilet installations in its houses. This gives us an important glimpse into how different sanitation solutions could vary depending on the household, location, period, and available resources. From pottery containers and pits to water carriers, waste disposal, drainage, hygiene, bathing, and the role of Egypt's dry desert environment, this is the surprisingly human story of ancient Egyptian toilets and sanitation. And there's a bigger question behind it all: How did an entire civilization keep daily life functioning without the modern infrastructure we take for granted? Because ancient Egyptians didn't live without toilets. They lived without YOUR toilet. Watch until the end to see how ancient sanitation reveals the ordinary side of Ancient Egyptian life — far away from pyramids, pharaohs, and golden masks.
