Why The W140 Will Be Worth A FORTUNE By 2060

Look at almost any car and you can tell within a second whether it’s timeless, or whether it belongs to a year. Most belong to a year — the headlights, the wheels, the chrome. All fashion, all timestamped. The 1991 Mercedes W140 doesn’t do that. Almost nothing on it was a styling decision. Double-glazed windows — two panes with a gap, like a house window, in a car, in 1991. Doors that pull themselves shut. Chrome rods that rise out of the rear wings when you select reverse. And a man lost his job over it. The car ran 18 months late, came in around 25% more expensive than its predecessor, and chief engineer Wolfgang Peter left. Mercedes built it, fired him, and never built anything that way again. Meanwhile Euro NCAP will demand physical buttons for a five-star rating from January 2026.
