What is a catechism, and why are there so many different Catholic catechisms?
Most Catholics are familiar with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, but did you know that different Catholic Churches and communities have developed their own catechisms throughout history?
In this episode, Fr. Deacon Trevor Fernandes of St. Michael Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church explores the history, purpose, and development of Catholic catechisms, explaining how they help Christians understand, learn, and live their faith.
We begin by answering a fundamental question: What exactly is a catechism?
From there, we explore different catechisms used throughout Catholic history and today, including:
• Christ Our Pascha: The official catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, rooted in Byzantine theology, spirituality, and liturgical tradition.
• We Walk With Christ: The youth catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
• The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults: A catechetical resource developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
• The Catechism of the Council of Trent: Its historical importance and the development of regional catechisms.
• The Catechism of the Catholic Church: Its origins, purpose, and relationship to the Second Vatican Council.
We also discuss how catechisms are used in parish education, including adult and youth catechesis, and why different Catholic traditions may approach religious education through their own theological, liturgical, and spiritual heritage.
Do different catechisms mean different Catholic beliefs?
Although Eastern and Western Catholics share the same Catholic faith, their traditions have developed distinct ways of explaining, teaching, and expressing that faith.
For Byzantine Catholics, Christ Our Pascha presents the Catholic faith through the theological, liturgical, and spiritual heritage of Eastern Christianity.
Whether you're Byzantine Catholic, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, exploring Christianity, or simply curious about Catholic teaching, we invite you to learn more about the richness of the Catholic Church and its different traditions.
