Most people think the Bible was put together at the Council of Nicaea, where a Roman emperor and a room full of bishops voted on which books would stay and which would go. But the records of that council tell a different story. Nicaea did not choose the books of the Bible, and no single council did. In this video we trace the real origin of the Bible, from the Hebrew scriptures and the Dead Sea Scrolls to Marcion's short list, Irenaeus and the four gospels, the Muratorian fragment and the Nag Hammadi library. We follow Eusebius and his disputed books, Athanasius and his letter of 367, the regional councils of Hippo and Carthage, Jerome and the Vulgate, Martin Luther and the Apocrypha, and finally the Council of Trent. This is a video about history, not theology: it looks at the paper trail, not at the question of faith. By the end you will see why Christians around the world still do not count the same number of books in their Bibles. No single room, no single vote: the canon was assembled slowly, one community at a time.
