Haji Mastan was Mumbai’s first smuggling king, a don in white who ruled the Bombay underworld without ever firing a bullet. This is the full Haji Mastan story, from a bicycle repair shop at Crawford Market to the night he split Bombay between rival gangs. Born in 1926 in Tamil Nadu, Mastan came to Bombay at eight, became a dock porter in 1944 and learned how gold moved through the docks. Soon he was running a smuggling syndicate along the Bombay and Gujarat coast. He worked alongside Sukkur Narayan Bakhia and Karim Lala, and he was friends with Varadarajan Mudaliar.
