Altdorf was already dying.
Its streets were burning. Its walls were broken. Its people were exhausted.
And then Bretonnia came.
“Still They Came” is a Warhammer Fantasy fan song told from the Empire’s perspective as Bretonnian knights arrive at the ruined capital and crash into the enemy rear.
They do not ride into a glorious city.
They ride into smoke.
Into ash.
Into a battle that may already be lost.
And still they come.
“STILL THEY CAME!
Through the sickness and the rain!
Blue and silver through the darkness,
Lances lowered into flame!”
For Karl Franz and the surviving defenders, the sight is almost impossible to believe.
Rank after rank of Bretonnian knights.
Banners cutting through the smoke.
Lances lowering.
A kingdom bleeding for another kingdom.
The charge breaks the enemy line.
The survivors cheer.
But the victory is bittersweet.
Bretonnia can break the siege.
It cannot bring back the dead.
It cannot rebuild the towers in a single moment.
It cannot make Altdorf what it was.
And that is what this song is really about.
Heroism does not always arrive in time to save everything.
Sometimes it arrives simply to prove that you were not abandoned.
“They could not save my Altdorf—
But they proved
We were not alone.”
This is an unofficial Warhammer Fantasy fan work inspired by Karl Franz, Bretonnia, Louen Leoncoeur, the Fall of Altdorf, and the final days of the Old World.
The world may have ended.
The songs haven’t.
