Kukova špica: The Forgotten Summit of the Julian Alps

A solitary journey into the heart of the Martuljek wilderness. Kukova špica (2427 m) is one of the lonelier peaks of the Julian Alps—quietly standing on the northern edge of the dramatic Martuljek group. Though not the highest or most technical, its appeal lies in its isolation: steep, unmarked paths, silence, and rarely another soul in sight. On this warm July morning, I began well before dawn from the Vrata valley, following a barely visible hunter’s trail through the forest and onto the ridge. For the first 45 minutes, my only companions were shadows and the crunch of earth underfoot. When I reached the summit, the logbook showed I was just the 19th person to sign in this year. The views from the top were as clear and sharp as the pinnacles around me. I stayed long enough to absorb the solitude—and then, on the way down, met visitors #20, #21, and #22.
