SERMON ON PSALM 133 The beauty, source, and reward of biblical unity. معلوت (چٹرھائی چڑھنا) یعنی ہیکل کی زیارت کے مزامیر General Introduction of The Psalms of Ascent 120-134: 1. The Psalms of Ascent: 15 Psalm of Ascent. Traditionally sung by ancient Hebrew pilgrims with music while traveling to Jerusalem for three annual festivals. (Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacle) 2. The Mishnah links the fifteen steps of the temple where the Levites sang these songs of ascents. The Spiritual journey upward. 3. Last of the fourth Psalms (122, 124, 131, 133) by David. One 127 by Solomon and Ten are anonymous. The Context: When David was finally received as king over all the tribes of Israel in Hebron, ending a terrible season of national division between Israelite and Judah (Benjamin). It is divine will and desire to be in unity. (2 Samuel 5:1; 1 Chronicles 12:38-40). Outline: 1. The Description of Unity: V. 1 2. The Metaphors of Unity: Vs. 2-3a 3. The Source and reward of Unity: V. 3b 1. The Description of Unity v.1 1.1, "Behold, to get attention, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell יָשַׁב‎ “Yashab” to live under one roof, e one minded and think together in unity. (Phil. 2:5) 1.2, How Good: טוֹב‎ Tob: Unity is morally right, healthy, and aligned with God's design. It brings glory to God and strength to the community. 1.3, How Pleasant: נָעִים‎ Na im: (Experiential Joy, Delightful and Sweet): The word "pleasant" is also used in the Song of Solomon to describe the beauty of romantic love. 2. The Metaphors of Unity (Verses 2 & 3a) David uses two rich Old Testament metaphors to illustrate how unity flows and functions: 2.1, The Precious Oil (Verse 2): In OT, oil in the temple used for holy activities represents the anointing of the Holy Spirit. When Aaron was consecrated as High Priest, this lavish oil was poured out, running over his head and down to his beard. This symbolizes that unity is sacred, it cannot be manufactured by human 2.2, The Dew of Hermon (Verse 3a): Mount Hermon is the tallest mountain in the region, bringing life-sustaining dew to the dry landscape. Just as the morning dew refreshes a dry, thirsty ground, godly unity brings spiritual refreshment, growth and life to a weary world. 3. The and Reward Source of Unity: v. 3b 3.1, The Source: Running Down: יָרַד‎ YARAD: Both metaphors share a common Hebrew verb: "descending" or "running down". Unity does not originate in our own strength or natural tendencies; it comes down from above. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit. As we align ourselves with God's will, He pours out the blessing of unity among believers. 3.2, The Reward of Unity: Matt. 18:20 Where His people are united, the heavy, life-giving presence of God descends.
