America's New Invention Could Make Power Lines Obsolete "10X MORE POWER"

The American power grid loses about 5% of all the electricity it generates before it ever reaches a home, wastes enough energy as heat to power all seven Central American countries four times over, and costs the economy roughly $150 billion a year in outages. And the basic design of those wires has not fundamentally changed since 1895. Now a team at the University of Houston has built a wire about the width of a hair ribbon that carries 10 times more electricity than copper and costs half as much to make.
In this video we break down the real technology behind it: the Super Cool Conductor, developed by Venkat Selvamanickam and his team at the University of Houston's Advanced Manufacturing Institute, winner of the Department of Energy's CABLE Prize in a competition the DOE literally named Beat Copper. At its heart is a ceramic layer of yttrium barium copper oxide laid down 100 times thinner than a human hair.
