Journey Through the Most Colorful Town on Earth: Guatapé | Colombia

Welcome to one of the most visually stunning and vibrant towns you will ever lay eyes on—Guatapé! In this video, we take you on an immensely pleasurable and unforgettable journey through its lively streets. Our adventure began at the world-famous Guatapé Rock (El Peñón de Peñol). After conquering its legendary stairs for breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding azure lakes and islands, we hopped into a local, brightly decorated tuk-tuk to head straight into the heart of the village. While these iconic three-wheelers are originally manufactured in India, they are uniquely and locally customized here with vibrant patterns and flair!  Guatapé’s history dates back to its founding in 1811 by Don Francisco Giraldo y Jiménez, originally inhabited by indigenous groups led by a cacique named Guatapé. But what truly sets this town apart is its explosion of color. Walking through the streets, you’ll notice that every single building is adorned with gorgeous, hand-painted bas-relief panels called zócalos on the lower facades. These intricate works of art are deeply symbolic: they tell the stories of the residents, celebrate local heritage, and often signify the exact profession or trade of the family living or working inside—from farming and coffee growing to bakeries and local crafts.  We spent our day wandering the cobblestone lanes, soaking in the cheerful colors, stopping by a local bakery to taste some delicious regional treats, and immersing ourselves completely in the welcoming culture.
