Could Jethro Tull’s The Broadsword and the Beast have been a double album? In Episode 5 of Beyond the Albums, we open another chapter in the Jethro Tull vault and explore eight recordings from the creative period surrounding The Broadsword and the Beast; music that reveals just how much was happening beyond the original 1982 album. Using the 1988 ‘20 Years of Jethro Tull’ collection as our guide, we explore: Jack-A-Lynn • Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow • I’m Your Gun • Down at the End of Your Road • Overhang • Motoreyes • Rhythm in Gold • Mayhem Maybe Along the way, we discover folklore, harder-edged rock, modern textures and some unexpected musical directions. And then there’s Jack-A-Lynn. Its story reaches back further than I previously believed, with an early 1978 demo followed by later acoustic and band treatments. It’s a fascinating example of how another recording can emerge and change what we thought we knew about a song. Taken together, these recordings raise an intriguing question: Was there enough strong material for The Broadsword and the Beast to have become a double album or was the original album stronger because of the choices that were made? Let me know where you stand. Beyond the Albums continues as we explore the recordings, singles, rarities and forgotten corners that reveal another side of Jethro Tull’s remarkable catalogue. #JethroTull Chapters 0:00 - Broadsword's Hidden Chapter - Jethro Tull 1:20 - Part 1: 'Jack-A-Lynn' - Jethro Tull 5:39 - Part 2: 'Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow' - Jethro Tull 7:06 - Part 3: 'I'm Your Gun' - Jethro Tull 8:11 - Part 4: 'Down at the End of Your Road' - Jethro Tull 9:08 - Part 5: 'Overhang' - Jethro Tull 10:09 - Part 6: 'Motoreyes' - Jethro Tull 11:26 - Part 7: 'Rhythm in Gold' - Jethro Tull 12:39 - Part 8: 'Mayhem Maybe' - Jethro Tull 13:55 - In Closing - Jethro Tull - Beyond the Albums Subscribe to The Collection Vault.    / @thecollectionvault  .
