Some men are raised on love. Others are raised on "hit first." "Like a Devil" is an outlaw country song — a first-person confessional about a lifetime of fighting. He learned his prayers in the dust, with a split lip and a hungry fist, and a daddy who taught him that winning meant hitting first. He kept score in the dirt, made a saint out of a vicious rage, and paid for every battle won in blood and bruises — until the room went dark and spinning, and the devil's shadow in it looked like his own face. Now the truth is knocking, the mirror won't lie to him anymore, and he'd lay down all his honor for one clean breath of rest — just to rip that devil from his chest. By the last line he's simply tired: tired of the fight, tired of the fire. If you were raised to be hard and you're tired of the fight, this one's yours. What did you have to unlearn to become who you are? Tell us your story in the comments. LYRICS [Verse 1] I learned my prayers in the dust With a split lip and a hungry fist Daddy said, boy, if you want to win You better hit first, and hit like this It'll take more than a sideways grin To carry that heavy lie in the mouth And a shovel full of righteous sin Will keep him buried in the torn up south One less soul wearing treacherous skin For a little more pride and a little less doubt [Pre-Chorus] And I kept score in the dirt With the hollow stare of an orphaned child If the world came reaching for me I’d reach back fierce and twice as wild [Chorus] I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) I’ve been fighting like a devil (All my life) And the evil things I’ve done Were the price of battles won Yeah, I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) Since the day I learned not to kneel If a man wants to win He’ll fight like hell not to feel [Verse 2] I made a saint out of a vicious rage Made a temple out of a muscled cage Blood and bruises the only currency For a bitter score that bleeds without mercy There’s a face I wear for winning And another one they don't see But when the room gets dark and spinning That devil's shadow looks like me [Pre-Chorus] So I bite my tongue and close my eyes Till the wrong looks like right And every time I choose that dark road I can hear my mother cry [Chorus] I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) I’ve been fighting like a devil (All my life) And the evil things I’ve done Were the price of battles won Yeah, I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) Since the day I learned not to kneel If a man wants to win He’ll fight like hell not to feel [Bridge] Now the truth comes knocking at the door And the mirror don’t lie to me no more Every passing day sends me further From the man I was before If I could trade this hard-earned valor For one clean breath of rest I’d lay down all my honor Just to rip that devil from my chest [Final Chorus] I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) I’ve been fighting like a devil (All my life) And the evil things I’ve done Were the price of battles won Yeah, I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil) Since the day I learned not to kneel If a man wants to win He’ll fight harder not to feel [Outro] I’m tired of the fight Tired of the fire One more scar And I might call it a night I’ve been fighting like a devil (Like a devil)
