Which UK cities cost a lorry the most to enter? I count down 10 cities by what their published rules can charge a lorry for a single day, and show the working for each. That covers Clean Air Zones, Scotland's Low Emission Zones and London's stack of charges and permits. Then comes the twist: for most modern lorries, the biggest cost of a city delivery isn't on any of these price lists. In this video: The £50-a-day Clean Air Zone cities, and why the annual cost matters more than the daily one Why Bath and Bristol double the price to £100 a day for older HGVs How Scotland's Low Emission Zones really work: penalties that start at £60, double on repeat entries and cap at £960, not a £100 daily charge London's stack: the Low Emission Zone, Congestion Charge, Direct Vision Standard safety permit, London Lorry Control Scheme and river crossing limits Why a Euro VI lorry pays almost none of these charges The hidden costs of city freight: time, access and record diesel prices What would actually make city deliveries cheaper, and what each fix costs Practical takeaways for operators, drivers and shoppers CHAPTERS 0:00 £50, £100 or £960? 1:02 What this video will prove 1:43 How I ranked them, and why Manchester isn't here 2:43 #10 Portsmouth 3:37 #9 Bradford 4:39 #8 Sheffield 5:33 #7 Newcastle and Gateshead 6:23 #6 Birmingham 7:29 #5 Bath 8:04 #4 Bristol 8:58 #3 Edinburgh 10:58 #2 Glasgow 12:12 #1 London 16:08 The twist: what modern lorries really pay 17:56 What would actually help 19:02 What it means for you 19:52 Close SOURCES Transport for London and trade guidance (Courier Exchange, trans.info): London Low Emission Zone HGV charges, Congestion Charge 2026, and Blackwall and Silvertown tunnel charges TfL: Direct Vision Standard and HGV Safety Permit, including the October 2024 Progressive Safe System changes and the £550 penalty London Councils: London Lorry Control Scheme hours and penalties TfL: central London river crossing restrictions (Tower Bridge, Rotherhithe Tunnel, Blackwall Tunnel) Transport Scotland, Aberdeen City Council and NetRegs: Scottish Low Emission Zone penalty structure and enforcement dates Fleet News: Glasgow LEZ boundary and launch Autodue (2026 summary): England Clean Air Zone charges for HGVs and missed-payment penalties Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan (council pages): the non-charging, investment-led plan RAC fuel price data, 28 September 2026 Road Haulage Association figure on extra weekly fuel cost per vehicle Rankings are my own analysis, based on the maximum published charge or penalty an older, non-compliant HGV could face in one day. Where cities charge the same, the order is my judgment and I explain why in the video. Annual totals and worked examples are my own calculations from the published rates, shown so you can check them. Charges are correct to the best of my knowledge at the time of recording. Always confirm current rates on the relevant council, TfL or Transport Scotland website before travelling. If this helped you see what a city delivery really costs, a like helps it reach the next person wondering the same thing. Subscribe for the next video, where I'll take one central London delivery and work out its full cost line by line, from the depot gate to the drop. I'm Dwight Givens.
