In this lesson, we explore stresses within a real fluid. Unlike an ideal (perfect) fluid, a real fluid is subject not only to gravity and static pressure forces but also to viscous friction forces. We will see that these viscous forces are contact forces that oppose the deformation of the fluid. Their natural representation is therefore that of stresses: force per unit area. What you will learn: Review of body forces and surface forces in a real fluid. Pressure force: always normal to the surface, isotropic, positive scalar. Viscous friction force: oblique to the surface, anisotropic, resistive. Couette experiment and shear stress τ. Why a second-order tensor is needed to describe viscous stresses. Total stress tensor: σᵢⱼ = -p δᵢⱼ + τᵢⱼ Properties: pressure is isotropic, viscous tensor is symmetric (τᵢⱼ = τⱼᵢ). Key question: How do we distinguish pressure from viscosity? The answer lies in the orientation of the forces and in the tensor nature of stresses. Key formulas covered: (dFₚ)ᵢ = - p nᵢ dS (dFᵥ)ᵢ = τᵢⱼ nⱼ dS σᵢⱼ = -p δᵢⱼ + τᵢⱼ Who is this for? Undergraduate and graduate students in mechanics, physics, civil engineering, and process engineering.
