Nobody had searched this farm with a metal detector. Not once. The family had owned the ground for more than a hundred years, but the farmhouse, the barn and even the road were gone. What was left was pasture, a stone foundation disappearing into the grass, and one man who remembered what his grandfather told him as a boy: if you're going to find anything good, don't waste all day around the house.
