The farmer stopped his truck at the edge of the field, pointed through the windshield, and said the thing I had waited thirty years to hear: nobody had searched that ground since his father was a boy. It did not look like treasure ground. No foundation, no old well, no abandoned house — eleven acres of knee-high grass, a crooked fence line, two walnut trees and a low rise you could walk past without noticing. Sometimes the place everybody forgot is the place that remembers everything. I am sixty and I have been swinging a coil over old ground for more than three decades. This field came out of a 1930s county map and a pre-war aerial photo: a road that no longer exists, two dark shapes near the middle, and a farmer's memory of a gathering place where neighbours ate outside. Where people gather, people lose things. You get the whole hunt here — forty minutes of nothing but iron, the wheat penny that proved the map was right, the hour every signal died, and the sandwich by the truck where I looked at that photo again and saw I had read it wrong. I had been searching the wrong part of that field by less than thirty yards. If you swing a coil: what is the oldest ground anyone ever gave you permission to search? I read every one. #MetalDetecting #MetalDetectingFinds #TreasureHunting
