How many sets per week should you actually do? Researchers pooled the trials and sorted them by weekly sets per muscle group: fewer than 5, 5 to 9, and 10 or more. Muscle growth climbed as the sets climbed, and the 10-or-more band grew the most. But past that top band the evidence thins fast. One short, closely supervised study in trained men pushed to 45 weekly sets and found more size but no more strength. So treat the top of the range as a ceiling, not a target. The sets that count are the hard ones taken near your limit, counted per muscle group rather than per session, and stopping a rep or two short worked just as well as grinding to failure. The national guidance only names a floor: muscle-strengthening activity on 2 or more days a week. 00:00 The number everyone wants 00:29 What counts as a set 01:09 What the pooled trials found 01:52 Where more stops paying 02:21 Why your number is not mine 02:56 What to do this week Sources: Schoenfeld BJ, Ogborn D and Krieger JW, Journal of Sports Sciences 2017 (35:11, 1073-1082); Baz-Valle E, Fontes-Villalba M and Santos-Concejero J, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research 2021 (35:3, 870-878); Grgic J et al., Journal of Sport and Health Science 2021 (10:5, 515-527); Schoenfeld BJ et al., Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise 2019 (51:1, 94-103); ACSM Position Stand on Progression Models in Resistance Training, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise 2009 (41:3, 687-708); Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, 2018.
