Political analyst and strategist Ronald Egesa is questioning the advice surrounding Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) following Friday’s demonstration at the Turkish Embassy.
Appearing on Radio One 90 FM, Egesa questioned the thinking behind the move, asking: “What do these people smoke?” He argued that Muhoozi should listen to the experienced and knowledgeable people within PLU before making decisions with diplomatic consequences.
PLU officially organised the September 18 demonstration at the Turkish Embassy, while its own leadership structure lists figures including Andrew Mwenda as Director of Communications and Edwin Karugire as Director of Legal Affairs.
But this is where I disagree with Egesa.
My question is not simply who is advising Muhoozi?
My question is: Does Muhoozi actually want advice that tells him “No, General, this is a bad idea”?
Because having brilliant people around you is one thing. Allowing them to challenge you is another.
We have seen Muhoozi publicly direct Andrew Mwenda to stop commenting on the Tooro succession dispute, while PLU officially identifies Mwenda as its communications director.
So perhaps the bigger question is not whether PLU has intelligent people.
It is whether those people are there to advise, or simply to defend and validate whatever the chairman has already decided.
And that is the conversation I want to have in this commentary.
Here is Ronald Egesa — and then my take on who is really advising Muhoozi.
