#VictorianChristmas #ChristmasCarols #ChristmasMarket A Christmas Market in an English Village, 1884 — peaceful Victorian Christmas carols and classical music for a snowy market day of gingerbread, roasting chestnuts and mulled wine in an English village. Two and a half hours of chamber carols on parlour piano, strings, harp, flute and clarinet. 📜 A CHRISTMAS IN HOLLYHURST · CHAPTER 4 On the first Saturday of December the wooden stalls go up along the village street, hung with pine boughs and lanterns. The baker sets gingerbread figures in her window, chestnuts crackle over the coals, and pyramids of oranges glow beside baskets of walnuts and beeswax candles. A woman in a burgundy wool cloak fills her basket with oranges, a gentleman in a dark green greatcoat turns a little painted rocking horse in his hands at the toy stall, and a cart of small fir trees rolls in from the woods. A fiddler plays by the lamp post, children crowd around the puppet booth, and The Holly Bush inn warms everyone with mulled wine by the fire. At dusk the lamplighter makes his rounds, lanterns glow on every stall, and the snow falls softly over the empty market. 🎻 CAROLS IN THIS CHAPTER Here We Come A-Wassailing · Gloucestershire Wassail · I Saw Three Ships · Deck the Halls · Good King Wenceslas 🕯️ THE CHAPTER, PAGE BY PAGE 00:00 Stalls Rising on the Frosty Street 15:00 Gingerbread in the Bakery Window 30:00 Chestnuts Roasting Over the Coals 45:00 Oranges, Walnuts and Beeswax Candles 1:00:00 A Painted Rocking Horse at the Toy Stall 1:15:00 A Cart of Little Fir Trees 1:30:00 The Fiddler and the Puppet Booth 1:45:00 Mulled Wine at The Holly Bush 2:00:00 The Lamplighter at Dusk 2:15:00 Snow on the Empty Market ⬅️ Chapter 3 · Gathering Holly and Ivy for Christmas, 1884:    • Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe for a Victorian C...   ➡️ Next chapter: a red sleigh and two grey horses bring the Christmas tree home through the snow to Hollyhurst Hall. 🔔 A new chapter every week:    / @hollyhurstcarols   ✍️ From the curator: "A village Christmas market is the sound of the season to me — fiddles, chestnuts and everyone talking at once." 💬 What would you buy first at a Victorian Christmas market: gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, or a cup of mulled wine?
