Written for Roland Peelman and the Hunter Orchestra, The Memory forms part of David Joseph’s orchestral triptych alongside The Dream and The Haunting. Perhaps the most abstract of the three works, The Memory explores the way memories are constructed from fragments of perception and experience. Conceived in part as a choreographic study, the music reflects patterns, sounds, gestures and changing light drawn from the suburban environment: birds, shadows, foliage, clouds and other fleeting sensations. The work was premiered by the Hunter Orchestra in 1995 at the Concert Hall of the Newcastle Conservatorium, conducted by Roland Peelman. This recording documents a live performance by the ensemble.
