Violinist Ellen Hayashi plays a passionate and precise performance of The Red Violin Caprices and her teacher, Danielle Belen, talks through the details of what made that performance successful. In this episode, she focuses on the subjects of bow control, partial finger blocking and clever timing. I’ve been asked to make a series of critique videos before, but that’s always such a delicate thing… So I thought about it, and who better to pick on than my own students?! Except I decided that they get enough feedback on things that need improvement, so these videos are all about pointing out and celebrating the things they already do immensely WELL. It’s important to be told when things are very RIGHT - it gives structure to the way we work and think about ourselves.
