Violinist Andrew Choi plays Ysaÿe’s first solo sonata, and his teacher Danielle Belen draws attention to his amazing double stops and chords. The secret? Practicing on the bridge and making lots of grainy bread sound! Andrew is currently a junior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. . . . I’ve been asked to make a series of critique videos before, but that’s always such a delicate thing… So I thought about it, and who better to pick on than my own students?! Except I decided that they get enough feedback on things that need improvement, so these videos are all about pointing out and celebrating the things I they already do immensely WELL. It’s important to be told when things are very RIGHT - it gives structure to the way we work think about ourselves.
