Key Features • Zuiki Mikoshi (Portable Shrine): A rare and magnificently ornate portable shrine is enshrined; its roof and pillars are decorated with zuiki (taro or hasu-imo stems) as well as various vegetables and dried foods. • Historic Procession: Carrying on the traditions of the Kitano-sai (an imperial festival dating back to the Heian period), the procession—featuring the Gohoren (imperial palanquin), Kenboko (sword-topped poles), and Yaotome (young shrine maidens performing sacred dances)—parades through the shrine's parishioner districts. • Schedule: The deities travel to the Otabisho (temporary resting place in Nishinokyo, Nakagyo Ward) during the Shinko-sai (Procession of Deities) on October 1st; various dedicatory events take place during the festival period; and the deities return to the main shrine during the Kanko-sai (Return of Deities) around the 4th or 5th.
