By morning the doors were open. He rang the bell at five, as always, and never explained — not that week, not in the thirty-one years he served afterwards. Nobody knew there had been a witness. A twelve-year-old boy was asleep in the bell tower. He is eighty-three now. What he heard at three in the morning made him believe, for seventy years, that the old man had lost his mind.
