Why do 37,000 Americans stop a baseball game to sing Sweet Caroline, a Neil Diamond love song from 1969? To a European, it makes no sense at all. Until you hear the story.
Every home game at Fenway Park, in the middle of the eighth inning, the whole ballpark stands up and sings. The song has nothing to do with baseball or Boston. The tradition started with a newborn baby, a woman at a sound desk, and one of the most superstitious cities in American sports. And in April 2013, after the Boston Marathon bombing, it became the song a whole country reached for, even the New York Yankees.
