He was next to Werner Tübke, Wolfgang Mattheuer and Bernd Heisig to the last of a generation of important artists in the GDR. Ihe leaves behind more than 4,000 works, including: The March of the Prisoners, a monumental copper relief to see in the reminder and memorial site of the former Mittelbau -Dora concentration camp.
