My wife is staying at her parents' place right now, and everyone keeps telling me to try Ichiran. So on a quiet Saturday, I walked over at 7 a.m. to beat the famous lines. Here's the thing: I'm Japanese, and this was my first time.
No staff at the door, a ticket machine, an order form for your taste, and a little booth with dividers so you can focus on your ramen. I ordered the bowl with every topping, plus matcha pudding.
What you'll see in this video:
An early morning walk through Tokyo, through an underpass covered in paintings. The ticket machine and the menu: one kind of ramen, lots of toppings. The seat map at the entrance, and the order form where you circle flavor, richness, garlic, green onion, pork, the red "secret sauce," and noodle firmness. The water tap at your seat. A salted egg you peel yourself, and my very confused attempt to figure out where the shells go. Tonkotsu ramen, rich pork bone soup with thin noodles, then adding every topping: egg, pork, kikurage mushrooms, and seaweed. Easily enough for dinner, and I'm eating it for breakfast. The wooden tags that let you talk to the staff without speaking, a chopstick wrapper that doubles as an order form for a noodle refill, the matcha almond pudding, and a job ad on the wall with the hourly pay.
Which wooden tag would you use? Let me know in the comments.
