Why does the GTA 5 Android port appear to work with Adreno GPUs but struggle with Mali devices? In this technical investigation, I explain the current Mali-compatibility problem and what the native Android libraries are doing internally. The APK contains Vulkan-related code for creating a Vulkan instance, detecting the physical GPU, identifying queue families, creating a VkDevice and handling the graphics VkQueue. Testing has already confirmed several important components, including Android NDK r27d, arm64-v8a support, Vulkan instance creation, physical GPU detection, queue-family detection, VkDevice creation and graphics-queue handling. The main blocker is that the native implementation appears to expect or detect a specific GPU architecture and does not currently contain the required Mali-specific handling. Simply adding Mali driver files is not enough because the APK’s native code must correctly interact with the GPU and graphics implementation. The team is investigating two possible approaches: rebuilding or decoding the native .so libraries to incorporate the required implementation, or redirecting and abstracting the GPU-detection and compatibility layer so the application can work with Mali hardware. The next stage is testing the modified native libraries on real Mali devices to confirm Vulkan initialization and graphics-resource creation. This is an independent technical analysis and development update. Compatibility is still under investigation.
