Humayun inherited the Mughal Empire from Babur in 1530. Just ten years later, almost everything was gone. Defeated by Sher Shah Sur at Chausa and Kannauj, Humayun was forced out of northern India and began one of the most extraordinary periods of exile in Mughal history. For nearly fifteen years, the fallen emperor crossed deserts, struggled against his own brothers, lost control of Kabul and Kandahar, fled while his infant son Akbar was left behind, and eventually sought the support of Shah Tahmasp of Safavid Iran. But Humayun’s story did not end in defeat. With Persian assistance, loyal commanders including Bairam Khan, and years of brutal conflict against his own family, Humayun rebuilt his power in Afghanistan. Then, as the Sur Empire fractured after the deaths of Sher Shah and Islam Shah, he saw his opportunity. In 1555, fifteen years after losing Delhi, Humayun returned to India and reclaimed the Mughal throne. His restoration would last only a few months. In January 1556, after surviving battles, exile, rivers, deserts, rebellion and civil war, Humayun suffered a fatal fall on the steps of his library in Delhi. Yet the dynasty survived. His thirteen-year-old son Akbar inherited the restored Mughal claim and would eventually transform it into one of the most powerful empires of the early modern world. This Regalore documentary explores Humayun’s defeat, exile, Persian alliance, conflict with Kamran Mirza, the birth and childhood of Akbar, the reconquest of Delhi, his sudden death, and the extraordinary legacy that connected Babur’s conquest with Akbar’s imperial achievement.
