What Made the Reno Gang's 1866 Train Robbery So Different?

How did the Reno Brothers pull off one of America's earliest famous robberies of a moving train in 1866? Discover the true story of the Reno Gang, the outlaw brothers who helped shape the history of train robberies in the American Old West. On October 6, 1866, John and Simeon Reno targeted an Ohio and Mississippi Railroad train near Seymour, Indiana. Armed robbers confronted an Adams Express Company employee, stole valuables, and threw a heavy iron safe from the moving train. But this daring robbery was only part of the story. In this American history documentary, we explore the rise and fall of the Reno Gang, including the criminal activities of Frank, John, Simeon, and William Reno, their operations after the American Civil War, and the expanding railroad system that offered new opportunities for organized crime. Discover the infamous 1866 Seymour train robbery, the Daviess County treasury robbery in Missouri, the major Marshfield train robbery of May 1868, and the investigations that brought the Pinkerton Detective Agency into the pursuit. We also examine the violent actions of vigilante groups in Indiana and the tragic events at New Albany jail in December 1868, when three Reno brothers were killed without trial. Why were the Reno Brothers so feared? What made their railroad crimes historically significant? And how did a gang that repeatedly escaped prosecution end in such a devastating tragedy? Go beyond the familiar legends of Jesse James and Billy the Kid to uncover a lesser-known chapter of American outlaw history. This historical documentary explores 19th-century railroad crime, post-Civil War America, vigilante justice, and the real people behind the mythology of the Wild West.
