Before the Legend: How the Gangs of the WILD WEST Came Together

How did the gangs of the Old West form—and what kept them together? Before the bank robberies, train heists, and wanted posters, there were family ties, wartime connections, business rivalries, and choices that drew people into crime. This American history documentary explores three different stories: the Civil War connections behind the James–Younger gang, the Lincoln County War that drew Billy the Kid into the Regulators, and the criminal partnerships surrounding Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch. Discover how loyalty, money, revenge, and disputed authority shaped these groups—and what their actions meant for the communities around them. Through Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Butch Cassidy, we examine the history behind the Western legends without treating every gang as the same story. When does loyalty become complicity—and when does pursuing justice become retaliation? Share your thoughts in the comments.
