North Carolina v. Miguel Salguero-Olivares
CASE BACKGROUND:
Faith was 19, a junior at UNC, from Hollister, Haliwa-Saponi. She shared an apartment at the Hawthorne at the View with Karena Rosario.
On the night of September 6 they studied at Davis Library, then went to The Thrill, a club on Rosemary Street that let in people under 21. Surveillance has them in around 12:40 a.m. and out at 2:06 a.m. Rosario said they left because she was not feeling well. Faith drove.
Rosario said they were home around 2:40. She said she threw up, sat in the bathroom from about 3:05, and left the door unlocked when Jordan McCrary picked her up around 4:25. A defense filing, as WRAL reported it, says Rosario texted McCrary at 3:05 that she had been hit, and at 4:04, “Please come.” That text has not been released.
McCrary told an investigator he saw blood on her finger when she got in the car. She said she did not know why. Police found no cut on her hands. A mark on his passenger door was presumptive positive for blood. The lab could not get a profile because the sample was used up.
Rosario came back to the apartment around 11 with Marisol Rangel. They found Faith. Rosario called 911 at 11:01. The call was unsealed in 2014. Full recording: • Faith Hedgepeth - Karena Rosario's 911 cal...
The September 7 warrant says officers found Faith on the bed with a black shirt pulled up over her head, unclothed from the waist down, a bloody tampon beside her, and a bag quoted as “I am a jealous b****,” in pencil.
The photo police released reads “I’M NOT STUPID B**** JEALOUS.” (The description in a Sep 11, 2012 warrant matched this more closely than the original description in the Sep 7 warrant).
Police have said the murder weapon was a Bacardi Peach bottle from the kitchen, found in the bedroom. A blue Riesling was collected too. Some stories call the weapon a wine bottle.
Rosario has not been charged.
On September 21, Judge Gregory barred the defense from telling the jury she Rosario did it. The jury can hear about the blood, the car, the shirt, and the thumps a downstairs neighbor reported between 3 and 4 a.m. There's also a dispute over a shirt Rosario was wearing that night. Rosario said she left Faith’s tube top on McCrary’s floor. Police found it in the bedroom.
Salguero-Olivares was arrested September 16, 2021. He was 19 in 2012. He has said he did not know Faith. Genealogy and relative interviews identified him first. On September 14, investigators got a DNA sample taken from him without his knowledge during a DWI stop.
He was charged with first degree murder, and three years later, the prosecution filed an amended indictment adding burglary, rape, and sexual offense. He pleaded not guilty to all four on August 3, 2026. The state is not seeking death.
The News & Observer has a State Crime Lab figure from the sexual assault kit: a likelihood ratio of 147 septillion times more likely if the profile came from Faith and him than from Faith and an unknown man. The story does not say where the swab was from specifically. A palm print on a bottle is his. The defense expert says two bloody thumbprints on the Bacardi neck are not Salguero-Olivares.
