Gentle Chords, the book that goes with this lesson (softer fingertips, a lighter touch and clean chords for older hands, with your first week planned day by day): https://ericsguitar.netlify.app/?b=1&...
Sore fingertips after ten minutes? You press harder, it hurts more, and the chord still sounds dull. For a lot of older players the soreness doesn't come from playing too much. It comes from pressing far more than the string ever asks for. (About the "90%" in the title: nobody has counted it. It's a headline. What I can tell you is that a heavy hand is the thing I see most often in people starting late.)
THE FOUR PIECES
1. Where the finger lands: the further from the fret wire, the harder you have to press. Slide each fingertip forward until you feel the side of the wire, then press only as much as the note needs.
2. The thumb clamp: thumb pushing, fingers pushing back, and most of the effort goes into your joints. Let the arm hang and carry the weight; the thumb just rests behind the neck.
3. The sour chord: very heavy pressure, especially on the thinner strings, can stretch the string and pull the note sharp. Check it with a clip-on tuner on the G string, second fret.
4. The key: find the buzz on purpose. Pick one note steadily, ease off until it buzzes, then come back one hair. That's your pressure.
No extra work: land, then lean. Rest your fingers on the strings first, then let a little weight in.
Everything is described for a right-handed player. If you play left-handed, mirror it. Sources mentioned: Douglas Niedt on buzzing strings, Andy Crowley (Andy Guitar) on sore fingers, Anssi Kippo (Astia Studio) on pressing the strings too hard, the CDC arthritis survey (2010-2012), Rachael Seidler (2007) on older adults learning motor skills, the Arthritis Foundation on heat for stiff joints, D'Addario and MusicRadar on string gauges.

YOUR TURN
Do the buzz test: let one note buzz, come back one hair, and notice how hard you're pressing now. Write one word in the comments: less, or same. I read them.
Next lesson: what to learn first on the guitar after 60, and in what order.
A WORD OF CARE
This video is for general education only. It is not medical advice. Some soreness in the fingertips during the first few weeks is normal. Pain in the joints, sharp pain, numbness, tingling, a finger that catches, or swelling is not: stop, and talk to your doctor or a hand therapist before you play again. If you use warmth for stiff hands, keep it warm, not hot, and skip heat on a recent injury or during a flare. Never force a finger, thumb or wrist into a position that hurts. Results vary from person to person. Eric is a digital presenter.
