Exodus 14:5–31 — “When Circumstances Make Us Afraid to Move Forward”
📌 Remembering the LORD and His promises gives us courage to move forward and witness His power.
Biblical / Cultural Context
The LORD had delivered Israel from generations of Egyptian bondage through the Passover. The people who entered Egypt as a family were now leaving as a nation, and God Himself led them by a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. But God had not merely delivered Israel from Egypt; He was leading them toward the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The LORD intentionally led Israel toward the Red Sea, knowing Pharaoh would pursue them. Israel had experienced God’s salvation; now they had to learn how to walk by faith in the God who saved them.
Passage Outline
I. When Circumstances Get Hard, It Can Seem Easier to Go Back to What We Used to Know (Exodus 14:5–12)
II. Remembering Who the LORD Is and What He Has Promised Gives Us Courage to Move Forward in Obedience (Exodus 14:13–20)
III. Obedience Allows Us to Witness the Power and Deliverance God Has Promised (Exodus 14:21–31)
I. When Circumstances Get Hard, It Can Seem Easier to Go Back to What We Used to Know (Exodus 14:5–12)
📌 Israel left Egypt with boldness, but everything changed when they saw Pharaoh’s army approaching. With Egypt behind them and the Red Sea ahead, fear caused them to forget what the LORD had already done. The same people who once cried out because Egyptian bondage was unbearable now said, “It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians.” Difficulty made their former bondage appear better than moving forward with God.
💡Do not allow difficult circumstances to make your former bondage look desirable.
When following God becomes uncomfortable, are you tempted to return to old habits, relationships, or ways of thinking?
God’s Word helps us unlearn the lies that make our old way of life appear better than obedience.
II. Remembering Who the LORD Is and What He Has Promised Gives Us Courage to Move Forward in Obedience (Exodus 14:13–20)
📌 Moses redirected Israel’s attention from what Egypt could do to what the LORD promised to do. He told them, “Do not be afraid” because “the LORD will fight for you.” Then God commanded them to “go forward.” They did not need to understand everything God was doing; they needed to remember who was with them and take Him at His Word.
💡Allow God’s promises to move you from fear to obedient action.
What step of obedience are you afraid to take because you cannot see how everything will work out?
Courage comes from remembering that the LORD is faithful, not from having easy circumstances.
III. Obedience Allows Us to Witness the Power and Deliverance God Has Promised (Exodus 14:21–31)
📌 Moses stretched out his hand, but the LORD divided the sea. Israel then had to walk through the path God provided. Their obedience did not produce God’s power; it placed them in the position to experience what He had promised. God delivered Israel, destroyed the pursuing Egyptian army, and Israel “saw the great work which the LORD had done.” Their experience strengthened their faith. They heard God’s Word, obeyed, and experienced His faithfulness—giving them greater reason to take Him at His Word again.
💡Move forward according to God’s Word and experience His faithfulness.
Are you standing on the shore admiring what God has said instead of walking through the path He has provided?
As we take the LORD at His Word and obey, His faithfulness prepares us to believe Him through the next difficulty.
📖 Exodus 14:14 (NKJV)
“The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
🙏 Father, when circumstances make us afraid, remind us of who You are and what You have promised. Give us courage to leave our old ways behind, move forward in obedience, and experience Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ Mighty name, Amen.
