The last night train came in an hour ago, a cold autumn rain is blowing up from the harbour, and the only light still on at the crossing is an old upstairs coffee house — a long window of white lace glowing over the street, a coal stove ticking by the glass with its pipe breathing steam into the rain, and the owner bringing up one more cup before the first bus runs. Downstairs a narrow door opens onto steep wooden stairs, a counter of small white cups and a red telephone, and a fish tank glowing under a painting of a ship. Upstairs, in the wide window on the right, a girl in white headphones has just stepped off the last train — her suitcase standing by the armchair, her ticket on the table next to a cup of coffee and a plate of toast — while a small caramel puppy sleeps in a basket beside her. Rust-coloured zelkova leaves blow across the crossing, sea fog swallows the ends of the streets, and far off on a dark hill one thin white tower still has its lights on.
