The tail of a typhoon is still blowing through the old town, tearing the yellow leaves off the banyans and sending them down the hill in the gutter, and the last place still lit on the corner is an old family cafe — a curved run of warm glass bending round the corner, egg tarts under the glass, milk tea through the cloth filter, and the charcoal grill still going at the back. Down at street level the whole curved front is glowing: blue-and-white painted tiles on the back wall, green enamel lamps, round marble tables, and the black-and-white wave pavement shining in the rain. In the curved corner window a girl in white headphones has taken the bench seat to wait out the storm — her umbrella folded and dripping beside her, a tall milk tea and a pork chop bun in front of her — while a small caramel puppy sleeps in a basket at her side. Far off between the roofs, one round tower still glows.
