How much does a steel bar stretch under load? Learn normal strain, the stress-strain diagram, the modulus of elasticity, Hooke's law and the axial deformation formula δ = FL/AE in mechanics of materials, with animations. We see why deformation limits matter as much as stress, define strain, read the elastic and plastic regions of the stress-strain diagram, and derive δ = FL/AE. Then we solve a stepped steel bar, a steel-aluminum bar and two bars hanging a rigid beam, using a sign rule that never fails and similar triangles. 🔑 Key concepts: • Normal strain (ε) • Modulus of elasticity (E) • Hooke's law • Axial deformation δ = FL/AE • Stepped (composite) bars • Rigid beam displacements ⏱️ Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:23 Why Does Deformation Matter? 00:52 Normal Strain (ε) 01:38 Axial Loading 01:52 Stress-Strain Diagram and Modulus of Elasticity 03:35 Total Elongation of a Bar 04:23 Stepped Bars and the Sign Rule 05:15 Stepped Steel Bar 07:27 Steel and Aluminum Bar 09:05 Bars Attached to a Rigid Beam 11:27 Summary ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚙️ Animated Engineering: Don't memorize engineering.
