Do you have to have a drinking problem to decide alcohol isn't working for you anymore?
In this episode of Sober Life Rocks, we sit down with Kate Bee, founder of The Sober School, to talk about *gray area drinking, sober curiosity, alcohol-free living, and what happens when you stop asking whether your drinking is “bad enough” to justify making a change.*
Before becoming alcohol-free, Kate was a successful BBC journalist with a career she'd worked hard to build. From the outside, her life didn't fit the stereotype she had of someone with an alcohol problem.
She was working. Functioning. Building a career.
And alcohol was simply part of the culture around her—after-work drinks, celebrations, networking and the familiar “work hard, play hard” lifestyle.
But eventually, Kate began asking a different question:
*Is alcohol actually working for me anymore?*
That question opened the door to an entirely different life.
In this conversation, we explore:
✨ What gray area drinking actually looks like
✨ Why you don't have to hit rock bottom to question alcohol
✨ The difference between being “functional” and genuinely feeling good
✨ Using alcohol to cope with loneliness, stress and feelings of inadequacy
✨ Why comparing your drinking to someone else's can keep you stuck
✨ What it means to become sober curious without immediately adopting a label
✨ How quitting alcohol can reveal choices you couldn't see before
✨ Kate's decision to eventually leave the journalism career she'd spent years building
✨ Rediscovering yourself after alcohol
✨ Why sobriety can feel more like an upgrade than deprivation
✨ How we can socialize and create genuine connection without alcohol at the center
✨ Why belonging shouldn't require everyone to make the same choices
Kate also shares what happened when The Sober School celebrated its tenth anniversary and women traveled from around the world to attend.
Would people know how to connect without alcohol acting as the familiar social lubricant?
They absolutely did.
That experience raises a bigger question about how we've designed adult social life:
*What if people don't need alcohol to connect? What if they simply need environments that make connection easier?*
This episode isn't about deciding whether you're an “alcoholic.”
It's an invitation to become curious.
If you've ever wondered whether you're drinking more than you'd like, repeatedly taken breaks from alcohol, used drinking to cope with stress or anxiety, or simply thought that life might feel better without it, this conversation is for you.
Nothing has to be terribly wrong before you're allowed to make a different choice.
Sometimes the better question isn't:
*“Is my drinking bad enough?”*
It's:
*“What might become possible if I made a different choice?”*
