Surviving (and completely failing) a sketchy tailwheel checkout in the brand-new Got Friends Taylorcraft BC-12D! Today we are leaving the freezing Alaskan winters behind for a gorgeous, sun-drenched VFR cruise out of Grand Case (TFFG) over to the Caribbean's most terrifying runway: Gustaf III Airport (TFFJ) in St. Barth.
If you know St. Barth, you know it's a pilot's absolute nightmare. You have to clear a massive hilltop traffic circle, immediately drop like a stone down a steep hill, dodge the beachgoers, and stomp the brakes on a tiny strip of tarmac before you plunge straight into the ocean. Doing this in a vintage taildragger with NO flaps, NO fancy GPS, and ultra-sensitive brakes turned this beautiful sunny afternoon into a complete disaster.
To say my VFR pattern radio callouts were sub-par is an understatement. I completely butchered the traffic pattern, messed up my calls, and had to circle around twice while my chill, stoner CFII companion—who clearly only uses his IFR rating and a good heart—just vibed in the right seat.
When I finally managed to touch down on that first attempt... muscle memory kicked in. I jammed down on the toe brakes like I was driving a standard nose-wheel plane, and the Taylorcraft immediately pitched forward, end-over-ending dead flat onto its back. 💀 After a quick simulator reality reset to redeem myself, landing number two wasn't much better—I floated deep down the hill, slammed the brakes, and barely squeaked to a stop right at the water's edge.
Despite my absolute circus of mistakes, this new Got Friends Taylorcraft is an absolute dream to fly. It's incredibly simple, lightweight, climbs like an absolute rocket, and features stunning visual details, right down to the realistic corrosion modeled on the cockpit panel. Real pilots and veteran flight simmers: come roast my terrible VFR calls and non-existent tailwheel brake management in the comments!
