Widow's Bay Season 1, Episode 1
I went into Widow's Bay knowing nothing about the show and this premiere immediately pulled me in! Right from the start, the series does a fantastic job of blending quirky comedy with eerie mystery, creating a town that feels both charming and deeply unsettling.
Created by Katie Dippold and directed by Hiro Murai, the premiere stars Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis alongside Stephen Root as Wyck, Kate O'Flynn as Patricia, Kevin Carroll as Sheriff Bechir Clemmons, Dale Dickey as Rosemary, and Kingston Rumi Southwick as Evan. The episode also features K Callan, Nancy Lenehan, Jeff Hiller, Christian Clemenson, and Bashir Salahuddin.
Widow's Bay follows Mayor Tom Loftis as he tries to transform his struggling New England island into a thriving tourist destination. Unfortunately for him, the locals are convinced the island is cursed... and as strange events begin to unfold, it's hard not to wonder if they're right after all.
It feels like a unique mix of mystery, horror, and comedy... so excited to see where this story goes!
Widow's Bay Season 1, Episode 2, "Lodging"
Apparently the best way to prove your town isn't haunted is to spend the night alone in its haunted hotel. What could possibly go wrong?
With tourism beginning to take off, Tom remains determined to prove that Widow's Bay is perfectly safe. When the locals try to shut down the supposedly haunted Breakwater Inn, Tom accepts a challenge to spend the night there himself—with a camera rolling to prove there's a rational explanation for everything. His encounter with a mysterious guest named William makes that increasingly difficult.
Directed by Hiro Murai and written by Kelly Galuska, "Lodging" stars Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and Kingston Rumi Southwick, with guest appearances from Tim Baltz as William, Neil Casey as Kurt, Toby Huss as Reverend Bryce, K Callan as Ruth, Olli Haaskivi as Ray, Nancy Lenehan as Gerrie, and Sipiwe Moyo as Chelle.
I loved the haunted-hotel setup of this episode and the way Widow's Bay keeps finding explanations that are just plausible enough for Tom to continue denying what's happening. I'm not sure how much more evidence this man needs!
Widow's Bay Season 1, Episode 3, "The Inaugural Swim"
Tourists have arrived in Widow's Bay, the beach is opening, and Tom is determined to keep things moving despite all the warnings. Surely nothing horrifying could possibly be waiting in the water...
While Tom meets Marissa and enjoys a little romance, we learn about the legend of the Sea Hag - a creature said to target men on the island. Tom soon finds himself wondering whether his new love interest might be connected to the legend, while Reverend Bryce makes a disturbing discovery in the woods near Evan and his friends.
Directed by Hiro Murai and written by Neil Casey, the episode stars Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and Kingston Rumi Southwick. Elizabeth Alderfer guest stars as Marissa, Carryl Lynn appears as the Sea Hag, and Toby Huss returns as Reverend Bryce alongside K Callan, Jeff Hiller, Nancy Lenehan, and Christian Clemenson.
I love how every episode seems to introduce another piece of Widow's Bay folklore while still keeping the comedy alive. The Sea Hag gives this episode its own little creature-feature flavour, while that discovery in the woods suggests something much bigger is beginning to unfold.
