Earlier that year Tam's Cantonese album 迷惑 carried 半梦半醒, also composed by Liang Hong-zhi and arranged by Tony A, with Cantonese lyrics by Calvin Poon (潘源良). The person in the song, half asleep, meets someone across time and space, and a moment feels as long as a year; the two of them live only for that moment, forgetting there is a tomorrow and forgetting to keep any time for the feeling to last. On waking, the other is gone, and closing their eyes again they cannot find their way back into the dream; they can no longer tell whether it was a dream or real. The MV on Alan Tam's official channel has over 260,000 views today. The footage comes from Stanley Kwan's film Rouge (胭脂扣, 1987), adapted from Lilian Lee's (李碧华) novel; Anita Mui won Best Actress at both the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards for her role as Fleur (如花). The MV follows Fleur: in 1934 Shek Tong Tsui, dressed as a young scholar, she sings nanyin at a banquet and lifts the chin of the rich young heir Twelfth Master (十二少, Leslie Cheung); lanterns are hung in the courtyard reading "dream-like as an imagined moon, hesitant as a falling flower"; on an empty opera stage he gives her a rouge box and fastens it at her collar himself. His family will not let them be together, so they agree to die together, with the code "3811" so they will know each other in the next life. Fifty years later Fleur comes back to 1987 Hong Kong to look for him. Her old brothel, Yi Hung, is now a kindergarten; she places an ad, "Twelfth Master: 3811, waiting at the same place", and waits there at eleven at night, but he does not come. At last she finds him at a film studio: revived all those years ago, Twelfth Master has grown old and works as a movie extra. She puts the rouge box she has worn for fifty-three years back into his hand, and she is gone.
