How do you know whether a leadership or management development programme has genuinely worked? This lesson explains why evaluation needs more than positive KPIs or enthusiastic feedback. You’ll explore the difference between objective evidence, such as retention, performance metrics and ROI, and subjective perception, including engagement, sentiment and everyday experience. The lesson also considers how different stakeholders judge success: senior leaders may focus on strategic alignment, participants on personal growth, and employees on whether they feel heard and valued. You’ll then learn how triangulation strengthens evaluation by combining quantitative, qualitative, observational and comparative evidence. Using a new-manager development programme as an example, the lesson shows how surveys, focus groups, line-manager observations and before-and-after comparisons can be brought together. Where evidence agrees, confidence in the findings increases; where it conflicts, the discrepancy becomes an opportunity for further investigation. Finally, four practical questions help you assess what the numbers, people, behaviour and longer-term changes reveal about impact.
