Song: Eh Kehi Rutt Aayi Vocals: Aina Singh Lyrics: Prof. Gurbhajan Gill Album: Virsa About: The poem is written from the point of view of an unborn girl making a plea to her mother. It speaks of a dark custom in which a daughter is seen as a burden before she is even born: the scan that reveals her, the family that keeps watch over the womb, the silence of those in power, and the dowry that turns greed into a noose around her neck. She asks her mother the hardest question of all: you were once a daughter too, so why am I unwanted? In the final verse she turns to the grandmothers and mothers and asks them to speak up, to stop treating the womb as a machine, and to end the destruction. ------ Lyrics ------ Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa, Eh kehi rutt aai Ghir gayi meri jaan ikalli, Babul bane kasai ni maa. Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa. Dubbiya sooraj sikhar dupahere Lag gaye teri kukh te pahere Haakam ho gaye goonge baihre Parakh masheenan chugli keeti, Kaatal ban gayi daai ni maa. Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa. Maayen toon vi puttar mangdi Meri vaari toon kyon sangdi? Anjammi nu sooli tangdi Aapni aandar nu kyon keeta, Toon vi ajj anchaahi ni maa Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa. Sunin babla sun arjoi Daaj de daanav laah layi loi Mera is vich dosh na koi Laalach vaali dori ban gayi Mere gal vich faahi ni maa Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa. Daadi naani maavan bolo Pai gayi jehri dandal kholo Dharam granthon varke folo Kukh nu niri masheen na samjho, Roko hor tabaahi ni maa Eh kehi rutt aai ni maa. ------------------------------- — Project Virsa — Virsa means heritage. This project brings old Punjabi poetry back to life as songs: Sufi verse, folk poems and the work of poets whose words shaped Punjab on both sides of the border. Many of these poems are fading because the language they were written in is fading. So every song comes with subtitles in three lines: the original Punjabi, the same words in Roman letters, and an English translation. You do not need to read Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi to follow along, and you do not need to have grown up with these poems to feel them. This is for a generation that inherited the songs but not always the words. Listen, read along, and pass it on. ------------------------------- © Aina Singh Official Illustrations in video are generated with AI #punjabisong #punjabi #punjabifolk
