Lyrics: Bulleh Shah (1680-1757)
Album: Virsa - Bulleh Shah Collection
About Bulleh Shah:
Bulleh Shah (c. 1680–1757) was a Punjabi Sufi poet who lived in Kasur, in what is now Pakistan. He was a disciple of the Sufi master Shah Inayat Qadri, and he wrote in the everyday Punjabi of ordinary people, not in the language of scholars and courts.
His poems, known as kafis, speak of love as the only road to God. He questioned rituals, labels and religious pride, and asked what any of it is worth without a truthful heart. That is why his words have never belonged to one community. For three centuries they have been sung and loved by Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus alike, on both sides of the border.
His poetry is still alive today in qawwali, in folk music and in modern songs across Punjab and far beyond it.
------ Lyrics ------
Bahureen ve tabiba maindi jind gaiya.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Ishq dera mere andar kita,
Bhar ke zahar pyala main pita,
Jhabde aaveen ve tabiba nahi te main mar gaiyaan.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Chup gaya suraj bahar rah gai aa lali,
Hovan main sadke mur je dein vikhali,
Main bhul gaiyaan tere nal na gaiyaan.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Tere ishq di sar ve main na jaana,
Eh sir aaya ae mera heth vadana,
Satt pai ishke di ta kooka daiyaan.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Es ishq de kolon sanu hatak na maaye,
Lahu jaandre bere mor kaun hataaye,
Meri akal bhulli nal muhaneya de gaiyaan.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Es ishq di jhangi vich mor bulenda,
Sanu kaba te kibla pyara yaar dasenda,
Sanu ghayal karke phir khabar na laiya.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.
Bulla Shah Inayat de bah boohe,
Jis pehnaaye sanu saave soohe,
Ja main maari udari mil pya vahiya.
Tere ishq nachaya kar thaiya thaiya.

— Project Virsa —
Virsa means heritage. This project brings old Punjabi poetry back to life as songs: Sufi verse, folk poems and the work of poets whose words shaped Punjab on both sides of the border.
Many of these poems are fading because the language they were written in is fading. So every song comes with subtitles in three lines: the original Punjabi, the same words in Roman letters, and an English translation. You do not need to read Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi to follow along, and you do not need to have grown up with these poems to feel them.
This is for a generation that inherited the songs but not always the words. Listen, read along, and pass it on.
