Renowned as a child prodigy, he was often called “the French Mozart.” His music is admired for its elegance and formal perfection. Although he lived during the Romantic period, his works often display the clarity, balance, and structural discipline of Classicism, making him an important guardian of the French musical tradition. Saint-Saëns possessed extraordinary musical gifts from an early age. He began studying the piano at the age of two, composed music by the age of three, and at ten gave public performances that astonished the Parisian musical world. At one famous concert, he offered to play any of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas from memory at the audience’s request. Beyond music, Saint-Saëns was a true polymath. He was fluent in several languages and had a deep interest in astronomy, archaeology, biology, mathematics, and philosophy. He even published scholarly papers on astronomy. This rational and analytical intellect is reflected in the clarity and craftsmanship of his musical structures. Throughout his long life, Saint-Saëns was an exceptionally prolific composer who wrote in nearly every musical genre. Among his most celebrated works are The Carnival of the Animals, Danse Macabre, and Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, “Organ Symphony”.
